A screw spike, or sleeper screw, is a large threaded fastener used in railways to secure steel rails and base plates to sleepers (ties). It provides a strong hold by screwing directly into wooden or concrete sleepers, often with plastic dowels for concrete, and differs from smooth dog spikes with its deep threads for extra grip. It firmly holds rails and tie plates in place, works with both wooden and concrete sleepers, and offers better holding power than traditional nails. Featuring a sharp threaded end, it comes in various head types like square, hexagon, or double-headed, and is available in different lengths, diameters, and thread profiles to suit various track standards such as the Ss series or square-head designs.
